What Are Cross-Cultural Connectors and How They Helped Me

By Andy Montgomery

Organizational health depends on helping people adapt and belong. Too often, employees entering a new culture feel disconnected. Cross-cultural connectors make the difference by bridging gaps, guiding others, and creating inclusion.

My Experience

I grew up in one city, went to college nearby, and still live close to home. Internationally, I had little exposure. So traveling 5,000 miles to the Republic of Georgia to attend an international camp with peers from Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Russia, Armenia, and Syria was a leap into the unknown.

Everything felt different: the heat, late-night traditions, and even dinner rituals led by a tamada who offers toasts before anyone else can raise a glass. Without guidance, I would have felt lost.

The Role of Connectors

That’s when I came to truly appreciate cross-cultural connectors. Georgian peers explained traditions, guided me through customs, and ensured I felt included. Instead of being caught off guard or excluded, I was able to fully engage and enjoy the experience.

A connector is someone who bridges the gap between cultures by explaining norms, modeling behaviors, and helping newcomers adapt. They can be formal leaders or simply individuals who step up to make others feel welcome.

The Leadership Lesson

By the end of the week, I realized I had moved beyond simply surviving in a new culture to truly thriving, and it was the connectors who made that shift possible by helping me understand the daily practices and rituals so I could participate and belong. .

For executives, the takeaway is clear: in any new environment, whether it is a new company, team, or culture, connectors determine whether people feel excluded or engaged. Leaders can identify and empower these connectors to accelerate adoption, build inclusion, and strengthen organizational health.

Key Question for Leaders:

Who are the connectors in your organization, and how are you equipping them to help others feel included and engaged? Have you made it a shared responsibility across the organization to connect people to culture and accelerate belonging?
